Assist vs attend: diferencia y falso amigo
Diferencia principal
Este es uno de los falsos amigos más peligrosos para hispanohablantes. En inglés, assist no se usa para decir que estuviste presente en un evento. Significa ayudar, apoyar o colaborar. Para expresar presencia en una reunión, clase, conferencia o evento, la palabra correcta es attend.

Cuándo usar attend
Usa attend cuando la idea sea estar presente en un evento organizado. Puede ser una reunión, una clase, una conferencia, una entrevista, una ceremonia o un taller. Es un verbo algo formal, pero muy normal en contextos profesionales.
I can’t attend the meeting on Friday.
No puedo asistir a la reunión del viernes.
All participants must attend the training session.
Todos los participantes deben asistir a la capacitación.
Importante: con este significado, attend no lleva to. Se dice attend a meeting, no attend to a meeting.
Cuándo usar assist
Usa assist cuando alguien ayuda a otra persona o ayuda con una tarea. En trabajo suena más formal que help. Puedes decir assist someone, assist with something o assist someone in doing something.
The support team assisted us with the setup.
El equipo de soporte nos ayudó con la configuración.
Could you assist the new intern with the tool?

Attend to: una estructura distinta
Attend to sí existe, pero no significa asistir a un evento. Significa ocuparse de algo o atender a una persona: I need to attend to an urgent matter o A nurse attended to the patient. La preposición cambia por completo la estructura.

Errores típicos
Incorrecto: I assisted to the meeting.
Correcto: I attended the meeting.
Para presencia en una reunión, usa attend sin to.
Incorrecto: I can’t assist tomorrow’s call.
Correcto: I can’t attend tomorrow’s call.
Una llamada o reunión se attend; a una persona o tarea se la puede assist.
Incorrecto: She attended me with the form.
Correcto: She helped me with the form.
Para ayuda cotidiana, help suele sonar más natural que assist.
Registro y familias de palabras
Assist suele sonar más formal que help. Es frecuente en atención al cliente, instrucciones, informes y descripciones de funciones. En una conversación cotidiana, Can you help me? normalmente resulta más espontáneo que Can you assist me?.
Los sustantivos también se separan: attendance es asistencia o presencia en un evento, mientras que assistance es ayuda. Por ejemplo, Attendance is mandatory significa que es obligatorio asistir; Thank you for your assistance agradece la ayuda recibida.
Regla de decisión
Si en español puedes reemplazar “asistir” por “estar presente”, usa attend. Si puedes reemplazarlo por “ayudar”, usa assist o help. Para videollamadas, también puedes usar join cuando hablas de entrar a la llamada.

La palabra correcta se reconoce mejor por la estructura que la acompaña. Attend lleva directamente el evento, sin to: attend a class, attend a conference. Assist suele nombrar a la persona ayudada o la tarea en la que colaboras.
