Errores comunes

Incorrecto: Sorry for be late.

Correcto: Sorry for being late.

Después de for se usa el gerundio.

Incorrecto: I apologize you.

Correcto: I apologize to you. / I apologize for the mistake.

Apologize usa to para la persona y for para el motivo.

Incorrecto: I am sorry of the delay.

Correcto: I am sorry about the delay.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre “sorry about” y “sorry for”?

Sorry about suele introducir una situación o problema: Sorry about the confusion. Sorry for es muy común con un sustantivo o una acción en -ing: Sorry for the delay, Sorry for interrupting.

¿“I apologize” suena demasiado formal?

¿“I’m sorry to hear that” es una disculpa?

No necesariamente.

I’m sorry we sent the wrong file. I’ve replaced it and checked the new attachment.

Reconoce el error y muestra la corrección.

I apologize for the delay. We’ll send the confirmed date by 3 p.m.

Añade un compromiso verificable.

También distingue sorry for + -ing/noun de sorry to + infinitive. I’m sorry for missing the meeting se disculpa por una acción propia. I’m sorry to hear that expresa pesar por una noticia y no implica que seas responsable. De manera similar, We regret to inform you… introduce una noticia negativa de forma formal; no sustituye por sí sola una disculpa cuando la empresa ha cometido un error.
