There is y there are: uso y ejemplos
There are se usa con plural.
Usa there is con una cosa: There is a problem. Usa there are con varias: There are two problems. En conversación puedes contraer there is como there’s, pero there’re es poco recomendable por escrito.
Estructura básica
| Tipo | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa singular | There is + singular | There is a pharmacy near the hotel. |
| Afirmativa plural | There are + plural | There are two exits on this floor. |
| Negativa singular | There isn’t + singular | There isn’t a lift in the building. |
| Negativa plural | There aren’t + plural | There aren’t any seats left. |
| Pregunta singular | Is there + singular? | Is there a bus to the airport? |
| Pregunta plural | Are there + plural? | Are there any rooms available? |
There is no es lo mismo que it is
There is introduce existencia: There is a delay. It is describe algo ya identificado: It is serious. Si en español dices “hay un problema”, en inglés no digas It is a problem salvo que ya estés hablando de “eso”.
Con any, some y números
En negativas y preguntas, any aparece con frecuencia: There aren’t any taxis outside, Are there any questions?. Con números, el verbo depende del sustantivo real: There are three options, pero There is one option.
Ejemplos en viaje y trabajo
There is a taxi rank outside the station.
There are several flights in the morning.
Is there a meeting room available?
There aren’t any updates yet.
Con sustantivos incontables y listas
Los sustantivos incontables usan normalmente there is: There is some information in the email, There isn’t enough time.
En una lista, el inglés cuidado suele concordar con el primer elemento: There is a desk and two chairs in the room; There are two chairs and a desk in the room. En conversación se oye there’s delante de plurales, como There’s two options, pero en escritura formal conviene usar there are.
There is some luggage by the door.
There are several pieces of luggage by the door.
Is there any information about the delay?
There aren’t many people in the queue.
Errores comunes
Incorrecto: There is two options.
Correcto: There are two options.
Two options es plural, así que necesitas are.
Incorrecto: Are there a problem?
Correcto: Is there a problem?
Incorrecto: It is a pharmacy near here.
Correcto: There is a pharmacy near here.
Para decir que algo existe o está disponible, usa there is.
Pasado, futuro y perfecto
| Tiempo | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Pasado singular | there was | There was a power cut last night. |
| Pasado plural | there were | There were two cancellations. |
| Futuro | there will be | There will be a short break. |
| Presente perfecto | there has/have been | There have been several changes. |
En preguntas, el auxiliar o verbo se coloca delante de there: Was there a problem?, Will there be enough space?, Have there been any updates?.
Cuándo aparece en situaciones reales
Esta estructura es muy útil para viajes: Is there a direct train?, There are no seats. También sirve en trabajo: There is a blocker.
Otras estructuras con there
La estructura no se limita a there is y there are. Puedes combinar there con verbos que expresan apariencia, posibilidad o permanencia: There seems to be a mistake, There may be another option y There used to be a café here. El sustantivo sigue apareciendo después del verbo.
Con un modal, el verbo queda en forma base: There could be delays, no there could are delays. Para indicar necesidad, es frecuente There needs to be more testing o, con plural, There need to be clearer rules.
