Contables e incontables en inglés: explicación simple
La diferencia que cambia muchas frases
En inglés algunos sustantivos que en español sentimos “contables” se tratan como incontables. Por eso aparecen errores con informations, advices o furnitures.

El mismo sustantivo puede cambiar de sentido
Algunos nombres son contables o incontables según lo que representan. Chicken es incontable cuando significa carne, pero contable cuando habla del animal. Paper es material incontable en I need some paper, y un documento o artículo contable en I submitted two papers.

Cómo contar lo que normalmente es incontable
Cuando necesitas una cantidad concreta, añade una unidad compatible: a piece of information, two pieces of advice, a loaf of bread, three bottles of water o an item of furniture. La unidad, no el sustantivo principal, lleva el plural.
Con cantidades generales, some, any, a lot of y enough funcionan con ambos grupos. En cambio, many/few se reservan normalmente para contables plurales y much/little para incontables. La guía de much y many desarrolla este contraste.
We need a few chairs and some furniture.
Necesitamos unas cuantas sillas y algunos muebles.

Incorrecto: I need an information.
Correcto: I need some information.
Information no lleva a/an.
Incorrecto: She gave me advices.
Correcto: She gave me advice.
Advice no se pluraliza como advices.
Incorrecto: How much apples do you want?
Correcto: How many apples do you want?
Apples es contable plural: many.

Cuando un incontable necesita cantidad concreta, usa una unidad: a piece of advice, a bottle of water, a slice of bread.

Algunas palabras que son contables en español se comportan como incontables en inglés. Information, advice, furniture, equipment, luggage y homework no suelen llevar -s ni combinarse con a/an. Para individualizarlas, usa una unidad: a piece of information, two pieces of advice, an item of furniture o three pieces of luggage.

News termina en -s, pero normalmente lleva verbo singular: The news is encouraging. Work suele ser incontable cuando significa trabajo en general, pero a work puede referirse a una obra artística o académica.
