Preguntas, negativas y afirmativas
Much y many son muy frecuentes en preguntas y negativas: How much time do we have? y We don’t have many options. En afirmativas informales suele sonar más natural a lot of: We have a lot of time y We have a lot of options.
Many sí aparece con facilidad en afirmativas formales o cuando la cantidad se enfatiza: Many customers requested the feature. Much es común después de too, so y as: too much work, so much noise, as much information as possible.
Much, many y otras expresiones de cantidad
| Expresión | Sustantivo | Uso frecuente | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| much | incontable | preguntas, negativas y énfasis | We don’t have much time. |
| many | plural contable | preguntas, negativas y estilo formal | How many people attended? |
| a lot of | ambos tipos | afirmativas cotidianas | We have a lot of work and a lot of meetings. |
| too much / too many | según el tipo | cantidad excesiva | There are too many steps. |
| so much / so many | según el tipo | énfasis | Why is there so much noise? |
I didn’t learn much. Many puede hacerlo en un registro más formal: Many were invited, but few attended.
Sustantivos que suelen causar dudas
Information, advice, furniture, luggage, traffic y work suelen ser incontables, por lo que combinan con much: How much information do we need? Para contar unidades, añade un sustantivo contable: two pieces of advice, three items of furniture o four bags.
Emails, suggestions, chairs, suitcases, cars y tasks son plurales contables: How many suggestions did you receive?
Errores comunes
Incorrecto: I have many money.
Correcto y natural: I have a lot of money.
Incorrecto: There is much people.
Correcto: There are many people.
“People” es plural contable.
Few, a few, little y a little
Usa few y a few con plurales contables; usa little y a little con sustantivos incontables. Del mismo modo, little time expresa escasez y a little time una cantidad pequeña pero disponible.
We have few seats left, so book now.
We have a few seats left; you can still join us.
There is little information in the report.
There is a little information at the end.
