Preguntas indirectas en inglés: estructura y ejemplos
La estructura básica
Una pregunta indirecta sirve para preguntar de forma más educada o menos brusca. La primera parte sí tiene forma de pregunta; la parte interna mantiene el orden normal de una frase: sujeto antes del verbo.

No inviertas el orden dentro de la pregunta
El error más frecuente es mantener la estructura de pregunta directa dentro de la pregunta indirecta. En Could you tell me where the office is?, where the office is funciona como una parte de la oración, no como pregunta independiente.
Could you tell me where the meeting room is?
¿Podrías decirme dónde está la sala de reuniones?
Do you know when the next session starts?
¿Sabes cuándo empieza la próxima sesión?
I was wondering if you had any availability next week.
Quería saber si tenías disponibilidad la semana que viene.
Can you confirm whether the invoice has been paid?
¿Puedes confirmar si la factura ya fue pagada?
Con yes/no questions usa if o whether
Cuando la pregunta directa se responde con sí o no, en la pregunta indirecta se suele usar if o whether. Por ejemplo: Is he available? se convierte en Do you know if he is available?. Whether puede sonar un poco más formal o más claro cuando hay dos opciones.

Errores frecuentes
Incorrecto: Could you tell me where is the station?
Correcto: Could you tell me where the station is?
Dentro de la pregunta indirecta no se invierte el orden.
Incorrecto: Do you know what time does it start?
Correcto: Do you know what time it starts?
La pregunta principal es Do you know…?; la parte interna va como afirmación.
Incorrecto: I was wondering can we move the meeting.
Correcto: I was wondering if we could move the meeting.
Con preguntas de sí/no, usa if o whether.
Cuándo usarlas
Las preguntas indirectas son muy útiles en correos, recepción, atención al cliente, entrevistas y reuniones. Suenan más cuidadas que una pregunta directa, especialmente si estás pidiendo información o un favor. Para combinar esta estructura con cortesía, revisa would you mind y do you mind y las frases para pedir aclaraciones.

Preguntas indirectas integradas en una frase
Una pregunta indirecta puede depender de una expresión de cortesía —Could you tell me…?— o funcionar como parte de una afirmación: I don’t know where the key is. En ambos casos, la cláusula interna mantiene el orden de una afirmación: sujeto antes del verbo. Por eso se dice Do you know where she works?, no Do you know where does she work?.

If y whether: elección práctica
En preguntas indirectas de respuesta sí/no, if y whether suelen ser posibles: I asked if the room was available y I asked whether the room was available. If es frecuente en conversación; whether encaja especialmente bien en textos formales y antes de or not: We need to decide whether or not to postpone the launch.
Puntuación y cortesía
Si toda la oración es una pregunta, termina con signo de interrogación: Could you tell me when the office closes? Si estás informando de lo que preguntaste, usa punto: I asked when the office closed. La expresión introductoria aporta cortesía, pero no cambia esta regla de orden.
