Prioriza seguridad y claridad
Para una alergia no te limites a preguntar si un plato “lleva” un ingrediente. Indica la alergia y pide que comprueben ingredientes y contaminación cruzada según tus necesidades.
Errores frecuentes al pedir comida
Poco natural: I want the chicken.
Más cortés: I’d like the chicken, please.
I want es gramatical, pero puede sonar demasiado directo al pedir.
Incorrecto: The account, please.
Correcto: The bill, please. / The check, please.
Bill es muy común en Reino Unido y check en Estados Unidos.
Impreciso: I don’t eat nuts.
Claro para una alergia: I’m allergic to nuts.
Una preferencia y una alergia no comunican el mismo nivel de riesgo.
Peticiones educadas en un restaurante
Además de memorizar frases de servicio, conviene entender la estructura. Aprende a usar would you mind y do you mind para pedir algo o solicitar permiso sin traducir palabra por palabra.
Dos frases que suelen hacer falta
Cuando ya terminaste de comer, puedes pedir la cuenta en inglés. Si llegas con mesa reservada, practica cómo decir “tengo una reserva”.

Server: Are you ready to order?
Customer: Yes. I’d like the grilled fish, please. Can I have it without the cream sauce?

Cómo adaptar un pedido sin crear ambigüedad
Para quitar un ingrediente, without suele ser la opción más clara: Could I have the burger without onions?. Para cambiar un acompañamiento, puedes preguntar Could I have the salad instead of the fries?. Si necesitas confirmar un ingrediente por alergia o intolerancia, no dependas solo de expresiones vagas como I can’t eat that: especifica el ingrediente y pregunta por contaminación cruzada si es relevante.
En restaurantes con servicio en mesa, Could we have the bill, please? es habitual en inglés británico y Could we get the check, please? es muy común en Estados Unidos. Para dividir el pago puedes preguntar Can we split the bill? o Can we pay separately?. La segunda opción deja más claro que cada persona quiere pagar su parte por separado.

¿“Bill” y “check” significan lo mismo?
En este contexto sí. Bill es habitual en Reino Unido; check, en Estados Unidos. Ambas se entienden ampliamente.
¿Cómo pido que retiren un ingrediente?
Usa Can I have this without…? o Could you leave out the…?. Para alergias, añade una explicación explícita.
¿Cómo se pide comida para llevar?
Para pedir desde el inicio puedes decir Can I get this to go?. Para llevarte lo que sobró: Could you box this up for me?
