Diferencias
| Verbo | Estructura frecuente | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| say | say + algo | He said nothing. |
| say | say + (that) + oración | He said that he was busy. |
| say | say + algo + to + persona | He said goodbye to us. |
| tell | tell + persona + algo | He told us the news. |
| tell | tell + persona + to + verbo | He told us to wait. |
What did the manager say?
¿Qué dijo el gerente?
She said, “I’ll call you tomorrow.”
Ella dijo: «Te llamaré mañana».
They said the delivery would arrive on Friday.
Dijeron que la entrega llegaría el viernes.
Please say hello to Marta for me.
Saluda a Marta de mi parte.
Si quieres mencionar a la persona después de say, normalmente necesitas to: I said the same thing to my colleague. No digas I said my colleague para expresar “le dije a mi compañero”.
Tell me your name.
Dime tu nombre.
She told the team that the deadline had changed.
They told us to use the side entrance.
Nos dijeron que usáramos la entrada lateral.
Could you tell me where the station is?
|---|---|---|
| tell the truth | decir la verdad | Please tell the truth about what happened. |
| tell a lie | decir una mentira | He told a lie to avoid the question. |
| tell a story | contar una historia | She told us a story about her first job. |
| tell a joke | contar un chiste | He told a joke to relax the group. |
| tell the difference | distinguir la diferencia | I can’t tell the difference between the two versions. |
Say y tell en estilo indirecto
En estilo indirecto, la diferencia estructural se mantiene: She said that she needed help frente a She told me that she needed help. La palabra that puede omitirse en muchos contextos: She said she needed help.
The receptionist told us to take a seat. La forma negativa es tell + persona + not to + verbo: They told me not to share the password.
Errores habituales de hispanohablantes
Incorrecto: She said me the truth.
Correcto: She told me the truth.
Al nombrar al receptor directamente, usa tell.
Incorrecto: He told that he was tired.
Correcto: He said that he was tired. / He told me that he was tired.

- Please ___ me if the time changes.tell — aparece la persona receptora, me.
- They ___ us not to enter the room.told — estructura tell + persona + not to.
- She ___ goodbye to everyone.said — la expresión es say goodbye to.
- Can you ___ the difference?tell — tell the difference es una combinación fija.
Si mencionas al receptor después de say, normalmente necesitas to: say something to someone. Con tell, el receptor aparece directamente: tell someone something, tell someone about... o tell someone to do something.
| Patrón | Ejemplo | Uso |
|---|---|---|
| say + mensaje | She said that the order was ready. | Importa lo comunicado. |
| say + mensaje + to + persona | What did you say to the customer? | Nombras al receptor después del mensaje. |
| tell + persona + mensaje | Tell me the reference number. | El receptor va directamente tras tell. |
| tell + persona + to + verbo | They told us to wait outside. | Instrucción u orden comunicada. |
Preguntas frecuentes
¿“Say to me” es incorrecto?
No. Es correcto cuando say lleva primero el mensaje: What did she say to you?
¿Puedo decir “tell about”?
