La consecuencia no siempre lleva will
La estructura más conocida es if + presente, will + verbo, pero la cláusula principal también puede usar otros modales o un imperativo. Can expresa posibilidad o permiso, may/might una consecuencia menos segura y el imperativo da una instrucción.
| Tipo de consecuencia | Ejemplo | Traducción |
|---|---|---|
| Resultado probable | If we leave now, we’ll arrive on time. | Si salimos ahora, llegaremos a tiempo. |
| Posibilidad | If you finish early, you can join us. | Si terminas pronto, puedes unirte. |
| Resultado incierto | If the weather improves, we might go out. | Si mejora el tiempo, quizá salgamos. |
| Instrucción | If you need help, call me. | Si necesitas ayuda, llámame. |
Orden de las cláusulas y unless
Las dos cláusulas pueden cambiar de orden sin modificar la condición. Si la cláusula con if aparece primero, normalmente se escribe una coma: If she confirms, we’ll book the room. Si aparece después, no suele llevar coma: We’ll book the room if she confirms.
Unless equivale normalmente a “a menos que” o “si no”: We’ll miss the train unless we leave now. No añadas otra negación innecesaria: evita unless we don’t leave cuando quieres decir “si no salimos”.
En la condición futura se usa normalmente presente, no will: If it rains tomorrow, we’ll stay home. Will puede aparecer en una cláusula con if en usos especiales de voluntad o petición, pero no es la forma básica para describir la condición.
